Book the wizard of oz5/13/2023 Yet over the years Dorothy's journey with her motley friends has proven fertile soil for a variety of new interpretations, including THE WIZ (1978) and WICKED (1995), demonstrating its power as a modern mythos. The Oz books offered a dream world for the children of Manifest Destiny, emigrating across the West. Baum has a complicated legacy: he was also a newspaperman whose opinions on Native American rights were especially pernicious. Denslow and Baum would soon part acrimoniously over the share of the profits (Denslow purchased, no joke, an island from his) the rest of the Oz books in Baum's lifetime were illustrated by John R. Their instinct was right: the book quickly became the fastest selling children's book in the United States, and was soon turned into a sensation at the theater. The expense turned publishers away until Baum and Denslow took the gamble to pay for the printing costs themselves. Denslow envisioned an elaborate production of color-printed plates to reflect the role that color plays in the story. Although it was only one of four books Baum published in 1900, THE WIZARD OF OZ was his most ambitious as a publication: he and illustrator W.W. First edition, second state, of the classic American fairy tale, a remarkably beautiful copy. The Centering Moment by Howard Thurman5/13/2023 Thurman never forgot that act of kindness, and dedicated his autobiography to the man on the platform who “restored his broken dreams.”Īfter high school, Thurman attended both Morehouse College and Colgate Rochester Divinity School. This stranger changed the trajectory of Thurman’s life, giving him the funds he needed to get to Jacksonville. Thurman thought his adventure was doomed to end on that platform until an “anonymous stranger” approached him and asked him why he was crying. When he arrived at the train station to make his trek north to Jacksonville, he was shocked to learn that while he had enough money for the fare, he needed more to check his trunk. Young Howard was only fourteen years old when he left the comforts of home in pursuit of knowledge at boarding school (there was no high school for black children in Daytona Beach then). Though his family had little to no means, they loved him dearly, and throughout his life, Thurman (Hon.’67) would often attribute his success to his family’s courage and sacrifice. It began in Daytona Beach, Florida at the turn of the century on November 18, 1899-Thurman’s birthday. Like many human stories, Howard Thurman’s story is one of resiliency, bravery, and hope. A Spy Named Orphan by Roland Philipps5/13/2023 Once upon a time there was a thing for 16-yr olds called GCE O-level 'English Language & Oral'. I couldn't warm to Jonathan Cowley's narration. I returned this audiobook after the first chapter or two. I'm sure there was a bit more to it than that which would explain his rapid rise through the ranks. I wish it had explored his personal career accomplishments in a bit more detail than just pointing out he ran a tight ship and did great staff work. This book puts a heavy focus on Maclean's motives, boozing and carousing, family life etc. Ultimately, he was outed through American intelligence code cracking efforts. At the same time, he compromised virtually every important secret that came his way in a career that took him to important postings in London, Paris, Washington, DC and Cairo in the period that lead up to and included: WWII, the Manhattan Project, and the early Cold War. Maclean spied for the Soviets for over fifteen years while rapidly rising through the ranks of the foreign service. The British foreign and intelligence services come off extremely badly in the telling. This audiobook draws on recently declassified official sources to present an interesting, informative and very sympathetic account of the life of the famous British spy Donald Maclean. Art of racing in the rain novel5/13/2023 Strike two, the narrator-dog Enzo’s human companion, Denny, is a race car driver, so the racing theme-as suggested by the title-is not only an important metaphor, but also drives much of the book’s plot.Watching or reading about racing has never held any interest for me.Īs it turns out, there was no strike three. Other than in the hands of a master storyteller-Paul Auster in his compelling novel Timbuktu, or E.B.White in the enchanting Charlotte’s Web-such a species-overreaching device is prone to cloying pitfalls. Strike one, it is not only written in a dog’s voice, but the dog narrates the story in retrospect as he nears death. I must admit that when a review copy of the novel The Art of Racing in the Rain arrived on my desk, I wasn’t optimistic.
