The Station by Jonathan D. Allen5/10/2023 For a more detailed description of my interests, please see the overview given on the root lab page. Our current work focuses on understanding root phenes that can be used to breed crops with better acquisition of water, nitrogen, and phosphorus. This encompasses physiology, genetics, and ecology, centered on organismic processes. My research focuses on understanding the basis of plant adaptation to drought and low soil fertility.

Mime and Beyond by Samuel Avital5/9/2023 In 1964, Avital joined his friend (and a fellow student of Etienne Decroux), Moni Yakim, in New York, performing with him in his Pantomime Theatre of New York. Avital later performed with the Compagnie de Mime under the direction of Decroux' son, Maximilien Decroux. In 1958, he traveled to Paris, France, to study dance and drama at the Sorbonne, as well as to study mime with the French masters, Etienne Decroux, Jean-Louis Barrault, and Marcel Marceau. There he spent the next ten years living in a kibbutz and studying physics, agronomy, theology, and theatre. At the age of 14, Avital left his home in Sefrou to travel (via Algiers and France) to the newly established state of Israel. Samuel Avital was born Shmuel Abitbol in 1932, in the small town of Sefrou, near Fez, in the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. Samuel Ben-Or Avital is a professionally trained mime artist, teacher of mime, kinesthetic awareness, and Kabbalah. Ravenels cold hearted rake5/9/2023 He inherited the estate from his late cousin and has every intention of parsing it, selling it, and continuing his life of leisure. She’s a widow a bit before her time, with both a commitment to propriety but also a propensity for speaking her mind. The main story is between Devon and Lady Trenear who are the A Plot of this will they/won’t they battle of wits in the English countryside (Spoiler. Though I started with book 5 of this series because it was the only available at the library and The Ravenels came highly recommended from my romance-loving pal, I think this book is a great introduction to romance, and to Lisa Kleypas. My one word may seem a little on the nose because “rake” is right there in the title, but this is a fun romp about three roguish rakes (or two and a half really, since one fellow is introduced mainly as the set-up to book #2 in the series) who have forsaken love for either leisure or work but might be (okay, definitely will be) answering the siren song of a woman soon. People like us dana mele5/9/2023 The girls in this inner circle are poised for graduation, scholarships, careers, and the lives they’ve dreamed of. Protagonist Kay Donavon is in her graduating year and has struggled from a working-class background and a personally tormented past to climb to the exulted level of “it” girl, the fear-inspiring top clique at Bates. Set in Bates College, an all-girls boarding school nestled in the woods of New England, Mele’s novel smartly mixes mystery with a coming-of-age story that hits all the uncomfortable buttons. On this particular New England evening the water is chilly, but when one of the swimmers bumps into a dead body floating in the lake, it turns ice cold. A group of laughing teenage girls peel off their clothes and streak through the woods to a nearby lake for their annual midnight swim. Dana Mele’s first novel, People Like Us, begins at midnight on Halloween. Irving the legend of sleepy hollow5/9/2023 His literary output has long been a part of the American vernacular, yet the actual source of these writings - the author himself - has basically fallen into obscurity. Largely forgotten today, Washington Irving has an odd historical legacy. Likewise is the famously tall and gaunt Ichabod Crane (“one might have mistaken him for … some scarecrow eloped from a cornfield”), scared out of his wits in “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by the terrifying, blood-curdling sight of the Headless Horseman.Īs rooted in folklore as “Rip Van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” are, they are not, in fact, popular legends and myths that sprang up during the early years of the United States - they are works of fiction penned by Washington Irving. The tale of Rip Van Winkle, the man who famously fell asleep for years and years and awoke to a changed, unfamiliar world, is about as familiar as it gets when it comes to American folklore. The Headless Horseman Pursuing Ichabod Crane (1858) by John Quidor | Google Art Project Largely forgotten today, Washington Irving has an odd historical legacy that dips deep into the families and lands of Westchester County. Dead rules by randy russell5/8/2023 “Are either of you mentally unstable, schizophrenic, or on drugs?,” Andrea Canning asked on Good Morning America. The “Whackers,” they said, were the same people who may have “killed” David Carradine and Heath Ledger, possibly set up Robert Blake, and could now be targeting Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan. “They” were “the Hollywood Star Whackers” the couple had been talking about in television interviews ever since they arrived in Canada in October, seeking asylum. Evi Quaid called from a pay phone in Vancouver to say that she and her husband, Randy, the actor, had tried to drive to Siberia, but they “couldn’t figure out how to get there.” She said, “We’re running for our lives.” She wanted me to meet them the next day in Vancouver’s Chinatown-which couldn’t be arranged any other way, as the Quaids don’t use cell phones anymore, because, Evi said, “they’re tracking us.” Twin sisters janice harrell5/8/2023 She constantly gave with everything she had- her smile, her spirit, her drive, her love for people, and her generosity. Verghese cutting for stone5/8/2023 The key to your happiness is to own your slippers, own who you are, own how you look, own your family, own the talents you have, and own the ones you don't. 'I hope one day you see this as clearly as I did in Kerchele. In order to start to get rid of your slippers, you have to admit they are yours, and if you do, then they will get rid of themselves. The slippers in the story mean that everything you see and do and touch, every seed you sow, or don't sow, becomes part of your destiny. That night the old man died in his sleep. Why try to lose them? He'll never escape.' The old man laughed, and he seemed happy when he said that. 'One night when Tawfiq finished, another prisoner, a quiet dignified old man, said, 'Abu Kassem might as well build a special room for his slippers. But his every attempt to get rid of his slippers ended in disaster: when he tossed them out of his window they landed on the head of a pregnant woman who miscarried, and Abu Kassem was thrown in jail when he dropped them in the canal, the slippers choked off the main drain and caused flooding, and off Abu Kassem went to jail. At last, even he couldn't stomach the sight of them. “It was a tale well known to children all over Africa: Abu Kassem, a miserly Baghdad merchant, had held on to his battered, much repaired pair of slippers even though they were objects of derision. |
